CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball senior guard Rena Wakama has been named to the College Sports Madness Southern Conference All-Conference Third Team.

Erika Joseph's Double-Double Pushes Women's Basketball Past UNCG 63-51
Behind sophomore forward Erika Joseph's first career double-double, 16 points and 14 rebounds, Western Carolina women's basketball staved off UNCG 63-51 Monday in the Ramsey Center.

Wakama, from Raleigh, N.C., leads the Catamounts averaging 10.3 points per game. She has scored in double figures 15 times this season and led the team in scoring seven times. Of the 29 games on the year she has scored 20 or more points twice. Her 299 points is a season-high.

Western Carolina, the No. 7 seed, opens play in the 2014 Southern Conference Championships at 1:15 p.m. Friday against No. 10 seed UNCG. The first round and quarter-final contests will be played in Kimmel Arena on the UNC Asheville campus.

The Catamounts swept the Spartans in the regular season winning in Greensboro 60-49 and defeating UNCG 63-51 later in the season in Cullowhee. Rena Wakama led the Catamounts in the first meeting with 21 points. In Cullowhee, sophomore forward Erika Joseph notched her first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

The last time the Catamounts met UNCG in the first round of the SoCon Championships was 2010 as an 8th seed. Western Carolina fell to the Spartans in the first round 57-55. Overall, Western Carolina is 0-2 in the conference championships against UNCG. In 2012 Western Carolina was the 7th feed and bested then 10th seeded Georgia Southern 61-56 in overtime. The Catamounts went on to fall to No. 2 seeded Appalachian State 61-46.

The winner between Western Carolina and UNCG will go on to face No. 2 seed Furman at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
