CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball freshman guard Lindsay Simpson has been named to the 2013 Southern Conference All-Freshmen team both by the league's coaches as well as the SoCon Sports Media Association (SCSMA).
Simpson, a native of Franklin, N.C., has played in all 29 games this season and has started 13 of the last 14 games. She leads the Catamounts averaging 7.2 points per game, scoring in double figures eight times this season including four straight. She had a career-high 25 points, the most points scored by a Catamount women's basketball player since 2009, in the 88-83 triple overtime win at Furman on January 13.
Five Southern Conference players from five different teams were both named to the coaches and media SoCon All-Freshmen list. Furman's Holli Wilkins was named Freshman of the Year in the coaches' voting while the media tabbed Lucy Mason of UNCG.
Seeded ninth in the Southern Conference Tournament, Western Carolina (7-22) will open the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament for the women when the Catamounts face No. 8 Georgia Southern at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Kimmel Arena on the UNC Asheville campus. The game has been marked as an Education Day event, inviting area school children to the game.
