A forward from Harlan, Ky., Hamm led the Catamounts to two conference wins last week, clinching the second seed in the 2003 Mountain Dew Southern Conference Championship. She started the week with a career-high 28 points and eight boards in a win over conference rival Appalachian State, while shooting 55 percent (11-20) from the floor. On the week, Hamm averaged 24.5 points and seven rebounds, while shooting 55.9 percent (19-34) from the floor. She also shot 76.9 percent (10-13) from the charity stripe. This was Hamm's second time receiving Player of the Week recognition this year, getting the nod in the first week of the season after recording double-digit scoring in four games, including two double-doubles, to lead the Cats to a 4-1 record to start the season.
The Southern Conference also announced its TIAA-CREF Academic All-Conference teams for winter 2003. A total of 77 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team. The 77 student-athletes averaged a 3.565 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Among that list are three Western Carolina women's basketball players. Yoneko Allen, Christy Blackwell and Janetta Heggins were each recognized for their outstanding academic achievements. Allen, a Gray Court, S.C., native, boasts a 3.98 GPA as a triple major in Sport Management, Business Administration and Law, and Marketing. A guard from Laurens, S.C., Blackwell holds a 3.90 GPA in Business Administration and Law, while China Grove, N.C., native Heggins carries a 3.31 in Sport Management.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the winter. This is the first time that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. This new honor is made possible by a grant from the Southern Conference's Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.
