SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball senior guard Kaila'Shea Menendez was named to the 2012 All Southern Conference Second Team by the Southern Conference Sports Media Association.
This honor comes on the heels of Menendez being named All Southern Conference in the conference coaches' poll on Wednesday.
Menendez leads the Catamounts averaging 11.7 points per game which ranks her ninth in the Southern Conference. She also ranks sixth in free throw percentage (80.4) and eighth in steals (1.7) in the Southern Conference. She has scored in double figures 19 times scoring a career-high 26 points against Chattanooga on December 19, 2011. Menendez also became the 23rd player in school history to go over 1,000 points in her career and currently has 1,114 points.
Appalachian State's Anna Freeman was selected as Player of the Year while Davidson head coach Michele Savage was named Coach of the Year. Freeman, Sophia Aleksandravicius (Davidson), Laura Murray (Davidson), Whitney Hood (Chattanooga) and Ali Ford (Elon) were all named First Team all-conference by the media. Paige Anderson (Samford), Courtney Freeman (Appalachian State), Kelsey Evans (Elon), Menendez (Western Carolina) and Raegan Thompson (Furman) were selected for the Second Team. Appalachian State's Maryah Sydnor was selected as the Freshman of the Year.
Number seven seeded Western Carolina (13-16) opens the Southern Conference Tournament Friday at 2 p.m. in Kimmel Arena, in Asheville, against No. 10 seed Georgia Southern. Should the Catamounts defeat the Eagles, Western Carolina will move on to the next round to face No. 2 seed Appalachian State at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.
