WCU Catamount Club - SoCon Tournament Information

Southern Conference Basketball Championship Information

Cullowhee, N.C. - After the final two Southern Conference regular season games were concluded on Sunday afternoon, the final seedings and pairings for next week's SoCon Basketball Championships have been finalized. The Western Carolina men's basketball team will enter the annual tournament as the seventh seed and face the 10th-seeded UNC Greensboro Spartans at approximately 6:00 pm on Thursday (Mar. 2) night - or 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one which starts at 3:30 pm at the North Charleston Coliseum. The Lady Catamounts are seeded fifth and will face the number four seed Appalachian State Mountaineers at 11:00 am on Friday (Mar. 3) morning at the McAlister Field House on the campus of The Citadel.

The Catamount men's team lost its chance at a first round bye on Saturday evening, falling on the road at Chattanooga, 71-67, Saturday night in the McKenzie Arena. The Mocs victory, coupled with Furman's 86-61 home loss to overall number one seed Georgia Southern on Sunday gives UTC the final first round bye as the number five seed. Furman will be the tournament's sixth seed, with WCU finishing seventh overall in the SoCon.

On the women's side, the Lady Catamounts earned the fifth seed and a first round bye on Saturday afternoon despite a loss in the regular season finale, 72-57, at UNC Greensboro. The Spartans, with the win over WCU, garnered the second overall seed in the tourney behind regular season champion, Chattanooga. It took Davidson an overtime session on Sunday afternoon at home versus Furman to earn the tournament's third seed, winning 65-58 in OT, which relegated Appalachian State to fourth.

During the regular season, both the Catamounts and Lady Catamounts swept their first round opponents. Western's men defeated UNC Greensboro 87-76 in Greensboro (Jan. 16) and out lasted the Spartans in Cullowhee, 67-53. The women knocked off the arch-rival Mountaineers 86-76 in Boone (Jan.9) and 82-65 in Cullowhee (Feb. 6) for an average margin of victory of 13.5 points.

The winner of Thursday night's men's WCU-UNCG game will face the North Division Champion, Elon Phoenix, at 6:00 pm on Friday night.

In addition to both the men's and women's basketball teams competing in the South Carolina Lowcountry, the Catamount baseball, softball, and women's tennis teams will also be in Charleston during the weekend. Baseball will play a three-game, Friday through Sunday series at Charleston Southern's Buccaneer Field. The softball team will also be at CSU, playing in the Charleston Southern Spring Softball Tournament at Gahagan Park over the weekend. On Saturday, the Catamount women's tennis team visits the College of Charleston in its Southern Conference opener (check individual sport schedules for start times).
