Cullowhee, N.C. -
After the final day of the 2005 Southern Conference regular season, the Western Carolina Lady Catamounts and head coach Kellie Harper now know where they stand for next week's Kyocera Southern Conference Women's Basketball Championship. The Lady Cats will be the sixth seed and face the 11th seed Wofford Terriers in the night cap next Wednesday, March 2 (approx. 7:30 pm).
Harper and the Cats entered Saturday with at least eight different scenarios that could have resulted in earning any one of the four through eight seeds in the upcoming tournament.
From the SoCon this afternoon, Georgia Southern rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to knock off East Tennessee State, 85-82, and the league-leading Chattanooga Lady Mocs, who also trailed at the break, used an early run in the second to get past the College of Charleston, 69-56. And in the final game with bearings on the seeding for the tournament, UNC Greensboro knocked off Wofford, 70-55.
Western swept its first round opponent this season, defeating the Terriers 75-68 in Spartanburg back on December 8, 2004 and just last Monday on Senior Night, 79-71. Since the Terriers joined the Southern Conference in 1997, the two have only met twice previously in the SoCon Tournament, each team gathering a win. WCU's tally came in the first round of last year's championship run in Charleston.
