ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Southern Conference announced today that Western Carolina freshman Jennifer Gardner has earned the Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for February 25.
A forward from Norcross, Ga., Gardner led the Catamounts to two conference wins last week, ending WCU's regular-season with a 17-10 record, the best season record since going 17-10 in the 1982-83 season. It also ties the school record for the most wins for the Cats since becoming an NCAA Division I program in 1981-82.
Gardner started the week with 13 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 69-62 win over Appalachian State on February 19. She was 9-for-9 from the free throw line against the Mountaineers. Gardner followed that performance with another double-double in a 69-67 win over conference leading UNC Greensboro on February 23. She scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Catamounts while shooting 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
Gardner shot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the floor and was 17-of-17 from the free throw line. She averaged a double-double, 16.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and dished out three assists and two steals for the week.
Western will have a first-round bye in the 2002 Southern Conference Tournament. The Catamounts will face Furman in the late game on Friday, March 1, at The Citadel's McAllister Field House.
