CULLOWHEE, N.C.- Western Carolina women's basketball (12-15, 7-11 Southern Conference) plays its final home game of the season at 4:30 p.m. Saturday hosting Georgia Southern (8-19, 4-14 SoCon). The Catamounts will also honor seniors Laura Sanchez, Caitlin Hollifield and Kaila'Shea Menendez.
The women's game is the second half a double header with men's basketball, who tip-off against rival Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
Entering the game, Western Carolina has won six of its last eight games and is currently in seventh place in the Southern Conference rankings. The seeding for the Southern Conference is still up in the air, in many spots, but if the Catamounts win on Saturday, they are all but assured a seven seed heading into next week's Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville. Should the Catamounts draw the seven seed, WCU will face the No. 10 seed at 2 p.m. Friday in the Kimmel Center.
BELOW 60:WCU has held its opponent below 60 points in the last seven games.
TERRY MOVES TO SEVENTH: Sophomore Shauna Terrymoved into a tie for seventh place for blocked shots in a career and now has 65 in her second season at Western Carolina ... She also ranks seventh for blocked shots in a season with 41.
RANKING IN THE SOCON: Western Carolina ranks FIRST in the Southern Conference in scoring defense allowing 56.1 points per game ... The Catamounts rank second in rebounding defense at 36.3 per game ... Kaila'Shea Menendez ranks ninth in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game, ranks fifth in free throw percentage (81.0) and ninth in steals (1.7 per game) ... Shauna Terryranks fourth in blocked shots, she has 41 and is averaging 1.6 per game.
FACING GEORGIA SOUTHERN:The Eagles of Georgia Southern won the previous meeting, this season, in Statesboro, Ga. 41-40 ... Neither team had a double figure scorer ... Also, neither team scored in the final three minutes of the game ... Georgia Southern holds a 33-13 advantage over Western Carolina in the all-time series ... The win in Statesboro on Jnuary 21, snapped Western Carolina's two-game winning streak over the Eagles.
FEBRUARY BEST MONTH: February has turned out to be the best month of the season for Western Carolina as the team has posted a 5-1 record in the month of love ... The Catamounts had a 4-3 record in the month of November, its second best month of the season.
