Spartanburg, S.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball player Janetta Heggins has been named the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week. Heggins, a junior from China Grove, N.C., averaged 10 points and five rebounds in a week in which the Catamounts defeated conference rival College of Charleston to earn their 18th win of the season, the first time the program has posted as many wins since becoming a Division I program in 1981. The victory also made one more win than the program had all last year.
Heggins maintains a 3.308 GPA overall, while majoring in sport management. A senior academically, Heggins will be graduating in the spring and plans to pursue a doctorate degree in physical therapy school.
Heggins had her best overall game of the season in the win over College of Charleston with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a career-high eight steals. She also shot 6-of-7 from the line in the game for 85.7 percent. With 163 career assists, Heggins needs just 17 more to break into Western Carolina's all-time list.
The Catamounts travel to Greensboro this weekend to take on the UNCG Spartans for the second time this year and their final road game of the regular-season. Tip-off is set for 3:00 pm on Saturday, Feb. 22. Western defeated Greensboro in their first match-up of the season, 82-74, in Cullowhee. It was the second straight time the Cats had beaten UNCG, both victories coming on WCU's home court. A win in Greensboro would snap the Spartans' nine-game home winning streak over Western.
