Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina junior guard Chevon Keith was today named the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week as released by the conference office. Just like her classmate Monique Dawson, who earned the honor a month ago (Jan. 16), the weekly honor was the first in the three-year career of Keith. She is the 11th different Lady Catamount to garner the weekly award in the program's history.
A junior from Ivanhoe, N.C., Keith shot 68.2-percent from the field last week to help the Lady Catamounts finish 1-1 and remain tied for the top spot in the SoCon standings. In Saturday's 75-66 win over Chattanooga, Keith shot 73-percent from the floor (8-of-11), finishing with then career-high tying 16 points. She also added six boards and five steals as Western earned its first-ever regular season sweep of the Lady Mocs.
On Monday night, Keith recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a career-best 17 points and 10 rebounds in the 83-81 overtime loss to Georgia Southern. Trailing by a pair with less than two seconds remaining, Keith caught a lob pass from near mid-court and drained a runner in the lane to send the game to OT. WCU rallied from down five in the extra session, but two costly turnovers inside the final eight seconds completed the upset win for GSU.
For the week, Keith averaged 16.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 3.0 assists per game. She is among the league's leaders in scoring (10th, 10.5 ppg), rebounding (3rd, 8.2 rpg), field goal percentage (6th, 46.2%) and steals (12th, 1.92 spg). She also leads the SoCon in offensive rebounding (3.62) and ranks fourth in defensive boards (4.62).
After having its 10-game winning streak snapped by Georgia Southern, Western will look to return to the win column this Saturday, Feb. 17 as it hosts the Furman Lady Paladins at 4:00 pm in the Ramsey Center. The game is the first half of a Catamount hoops doubleheader, with the men hosting the SoCon-leading Davidson Wildcats at 7:00 pm.
Both games will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network and can be heard locally in Western North Carolina on WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee.
