Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina sophomore guard Lauren Powell was today named the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 7. The award is the third this season for the Asheville, N.C., native as she also garnered the honor back on January 24 and December 7.

Powell averaged 20 points and 3.5 rebounds per game last week to help lead the Lady Catamounts to a 2-0 week and run their current winning streak to nine games. She shot 56-percent from the floor on the week, including 53.5-percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Powell opened the week with 21 points in Western's 67-56 win over Davidson on Saturday. She then led all scorers with 19 points as the Lady Catamounts earned their fifth-straight win over arch-rival Appalachian State, 77-68 on Monday in Boone.

Off the court, Powell boasts a 3.904 GPA and is majoring in nutrition. She is a member of the SoCon Honor Roll and received the Commissioner's Medal in 2006.

Western Carolina hosts the Chattanooga Lady Mocs this Saturday, Feb. 10 in the first half of a Catamount basketball double-header. Saturday is a first-place showdown as the Lady Cats and Lady Mocs both boast conference records of 11-2.
