Cullowhee, N.C. -
On Monday night (Feb. 6) the Western Carolina Athletics Department will honor a women's basketball great as it hangs the retired #25 jersey of all-time leading scorer, Jayne Arledge, from the rafters in the Ramsey Center. The ceremony will precede the Southern Conference battle between Western and rival, Appalachiani State, at 7:00 pm.
Arledge's jersey will hang alongside WCU men's basketball greats such as Ronald Rogers (1949-53), Henry Logan (1964-68), and Mel Gibson (1959-63).
A 1992 WCU Hall of Fame inductee, Arledge played for the Lady Cats from 1976-79, helping WCU to a combined record of 62-40. She continues to hold seven WCU single-season and career records. She scored 1,928 points in her career to rank as Western's all-time leading scorer, and also holds the all-time best scoring average of 19.5 points per game. Aside from the seven lists she tops, Arledge also appears in the WCU Top 10 charts for seasonal scoring average (21.7 points per game in 1979 and 19.4 ppg in `76); seasonal field goal percentage (55.1-percent in 1978); free throws made in a season (112 in 1979); free throws attempted in a season (168 in 1978); career field goal percentage (49.6-percent); and free throws made and attempted in a career (342-of-562).
She was first female to receive athletic grant-in aid at Western Carolina University in 1976 and the first female to have her jersey retired in school history. Arledge was also Western Carolina's only four-time, all-state performer in the AIAW.
Arledge has spent the last 25 seasons as the head coach at North Greenville College.
