Spartanburg, S.C. - Western Carolina junior Jennifer Gardner has been selected the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 3. This is the second time Gardner has earned the honor, doing so as a freshman as well, and the second time this year a Catamount has been honored as senior Tiffany Hamm received the nod during the first week of the season.
A forward from Norcross, Ga., Gardner led the Catamounts to two conference wins last week, supplying them with double-double efforts in both contests. She started the week with 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 75-70 win over Davidson on Jan. 27 to help give Western the season sweep of the Wildcats for the first time since the 2000-01 season. Gardner shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the floor and hit 11-of-11 free throws, including two key free throws with 36 seconds on the clock to help seal the win for the Cats. She then led WCU to a 74-58 win over College of Charleston, which also gave the Cats the season sweep, with a career-tying 24 points and 14 rebounds while shooting 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the floor.
On the week, Gardner shot 62.5 percent (15-of-24) from the floor, averaging 23.5 points and 12 rebounds, while adding three steals, one assist and a block. She also hit 17-of-19 free throws, shooting 89.5 percent from the line.
Gardner and the rest of the Catamounts are gearing up for a Thursday night showdown at SoCon-leading Chattanooga. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm and the game can be seen live on CSTV (College Sports Television), marking the first ever nationally televised coverage of Southern Conference Women's Basketball. CSTV is offered through Direct TV or you can call your local cable provider to see if it is offered in your area.
