Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina basketball sophomore Monique Dawson and senior David Berghoefer were today named the Catamount Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Month for their respective performances during the month of January. Dawson joins previous monthly female winners Emily Pierce (September), Ashley Hovda (October), Alesha Row (November), and freshman teammate, Lauren Powell (December), with Berghoefer joining Matt Cook (September), Mitchell Dukes (October), Rico Reese (November), and classmate Corey Muirhead (December) as the male winners.

Dawson (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Lady Catamounts during January, averaging 13.5 points per game. The second-year guard recorded double-figure scoring in eight of the 10 games during the month, including a career-long, six-game streak and tallying 20-points on two occasions. She tossed in a career-best 23 points in the road win over rival, Appalachian State on January 9 and scored 20 points and boarded a career-best 11 rebounds for her first career double-double at home versus Wofford on January 28. While raising her overall seasonal scoring average into double-digits (10.5) and moving into second on the team in scoring, Dawson also averaged 3.7 rebounds per game during the month.

Also receiving consideration for January's female award were December's winner, Powell, and track & field sophomore, Raquel Ramseur. Powell ranked second on the team with a 13.2 points per game average during the month, recording double-figure scoring in eight of the 10 games. She also shot 42.9-percent from 3-point range during the month, connecting on 27, 3-pointers helping her to move onto WCU's single-season 3-point leader board, sixth at the month's end. Ramseur recorded two individual and one team podium finishes during the month. At the Mountaineer Winter Open, she set a Holmes Center record en route to winning the 200-meter dash (24.79) and placed third in the 55-meter dash. Running a leg of the 4x400-meter relay team, Ramseur helped WCU to a third-place finish at the Niswonger Invitational in January's first meet.

Berghoefer (Cross Plains, Wisc.) recorded four double-doubles during the month of January to average 13.5 points and 8.6 rebounds, while also dishing out 11 assists and swiping 11 steals. At Elon on Jan. 21, his numbers suffered a bit due to fold trouble, picking up two fouls in the first 90 seconds of the game and ended with just four points. Since the Elon game, though, he scored 17 versus the College of Charleston (with seven rebounds), 17 at Wofford (with 12 rebounds) and 10 versus Furman (with 12 rebounds). Also over his last three games, has dished out six assists with five steals. Berghoefer's best game of the month came in a big win at UNC Greensboro where he connected on 10-of-15 shots, including his second career 3-pointer, to score 23 points, while grabbing seven boards. Also, at UNCG, guarded one of the premier big men in the SoCon, Kyle Hines, and forced him into nine turnovers on the night. In the Jan. 14 win over Chattanooga, which snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Mocs, Berghoefer tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, tying a career-high with four assists. Although WCU lost at Appalachian State, Berghoefer had 11 points and a season-high 14 rebounds and he started the month by scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds at Ole Miss.

Also receiving consideration for January's award was track and field sophomore Zeb Johnson. At the Mountaineer Winter Open, Johnson scored two podium finishes with a first-place run in the 55-meter dash (6.39) and was just edged by senior teammate, Milton Bolton, in the 200-meter dash, finishing second with a time of 22.08. At the month's first event, Johnson helped WCU's 4x400-meter relay team place third at the Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.

Berghoefer and the Catamount men's team visits the Davidson Wildcats at 1:00 pm this Saturday, Feb. 4, while Dawson and the Lady Catamounts host Davidson at 5:00 pm in the Ramsey Center. Both games can be heard on the Catamount Sports Network over three different stations. The men's game will be carried by 680 AM WRGC (www.WRGC.com) in Sylva, with the women's game broadcast in the Asheville market on 1350 AM WZNN (www.supertalk1350.com). WWCU-FM in Cullowhee, Power 90dot5, will carry both the men's and women's games, with streaming audio also available at www.WWCUFM.com.
