Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina's Christy Blackwell of the women's basketball team has been named the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for her accomplishments during the week of January 29. To be eligible, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.2 grade point average, must have completed one full academic year at the member institution and they must have accomplished a significant achievement in an athletic event in the seven days prior to their selection.

Blackwell, a senior from Laurens, S.C., led the Catamounts to two conference wins last week. She started the week with 11 points, six assists and four steals in a 65-57 win at Georgia Southern on January 24. Her four steals put her in a tie for first on WCU's career steals list with 243. Blackwell completed the week with nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in the Catamounts' 75-70 win over Davidson on January 27. With the first steal in the victory, she became Western's outright all-time leader in the category.

Blackwell averaged 10 points, 3.5 steals and six assists in the two wins. She currently holds a 3.71 GPA in Business Administration & Law and is an Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar. She currently holds three Catamount basketball records and appears on WCU's career and single-season lists five more times.
