Cullowhee, N.C. -
On Saturday, when the Lady Catamount women's basketball team host Wofford at 5:00 pm, and Monday, when the Cats host Furman in men's basketball action at 7:00 pm, the WCU Department of Athletics will have two great promotions. First, on Saturday, Western will participate in the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport Day. On Monday, the Department of Athletics will bring back a favorite of the community and students with its annual Beach Night.
The National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986 to honor female athletic achievement and recognize the importance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women. In honor of that day, Western will allow all girls and women admittance to the game for FREE!
NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports. Western will look for its second-consecutive home victory and try to make it 10-straight over the Terriers.
Two days later, on Monday, the Catamount men host Furman in a Cullowhee Tradition; Beach Night. Come dressed in your favorite beach wear and celebrate the summer during these cold, winter months. You could win the chance to be Domino's Fan of the Game, in which you and four friends will sit and eat free Domino's pizza while drinking your favorite Coca-Cola beverage and watching the Catamounts up close and personal on the floor.
To get everyone on their feet, moving and grooving to the music, the Mountain Shag Club will do a special performance at halftime. Do not miss your chance to watch and learn from the best shaggers in Western North Carolina.
Do you think you have the pastiest legs in Cullowhee? Well prove it by entering the "Pasty Legs Contest" and show them off. The winner of the contest will win a free month of tanning from Sunflair Tanning Salon at the Catamount Travel Center, in Cullowhee.
Cheer on the Catamounts as they look to move up the conference standings. It is sure to be an offensive battle, with both Western and Furman leading the SoCon in three-point shooting. Junior guard, Kyle Greathouse is second in the conference making 47 percent of his 3-point shots. Also, Western is one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the Southern Conference, increasing your chance to get a free basketball t-shirt each time the Cats hit a trey as part of the Zaxby's 3-Point T-Shirt promotion.
Join us on "Manic Monday" where general admission tickets are only $2. Monday is sure to be a beachy good time!
