Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina senior forward Jennifer Gardner has been selected Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced today. The Norcross, Ga., native scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Catamounts to a 92-81 victory over Georgia Southern this past Saturday.

Gardner, who recorded her fifth double-double of the season and her second in as many games, was 11-of-16 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line in scoring her 28 points. With the Catamounts down four at the break, Gardner scored 18 second-half points to help WCU out-score the Eagles 57-42 in the final 20 minutes. Amazingly, Gardner posted her career high while playing just 18 minutes.

For the season, Gardner leads the Catamounts by averaging a SoCon-best 8.6 rebounds per contest, while ranking 10th in the league by averaging 11.2 points per game. In addition to posting double-doubles in her last two games (23 points and 16 rebounds versus Elon), Gardner has made 17 consecutive free throws, moving to 10th in the league in free throw percentage (.769). She additionally ranks 11th in the SoCon in field goal percentage (.410).

For her career, Gardner ranks 14th on the WCU all-time scoring list (1,131 points), seventh in career rebounds (749), fourth in career rebound average (7.3) and second in career free throws made (357).

Gardner will lead Western in its game at Davidson tonight (Jan. 25). Earlier this season, the Catamounts handed the Wildcats a 74-56 setback. Tonight's game will be broadcast on Western Carolina's campus radio station 90.5 FM with tip-off set for 7 pm.
