Cullowhee, N.C. - For the second time this season, Western Carolina women's basketball sophomore Lauren Powell was today named the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 24. Powell garnered the recognition back on Dec. 7 joining women's cross country/track & field student-athlete, Kerrie Savery, as the two Catamounts to have earned the award this year.

Powell averaged 14.5 points per game and helped the Lady Catamounts go 2-0 last week as a part of their current five-game winning streak. She just missed her career-high, scoring a season-best 21 points on 10-of-18 from the floor in WCU's 58-47 victory over Furman on Saturday. On Monday, the Asheville, N.C., native finished with eight points and three offensive rebounds in the 64-52 win over College of Charleston.

Powell has scored in double-figures in 33 of her 49 career games to date, scoring 20-points or more three times. Also, her 89 career 3-pointers made rank 6th in WCU's record book and she is currently just 11 made 3's away from moving into fifth.

Off the court, Powell boasts a 3.904 GPA and has yet to declare a major. She is a member of the SoCon Honor Roll and received the SoCon Commissioner's Medal in 2006.

Powell and the Lady Catamounts return to action this Saturday, Jan. 27 as they host the Wofford Terriers at 4:00 pm in the Ramsey Center. In conjunction with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the Lady Catamounts are asking fans to "Think Pink" and to wear pink to the game on Saturday in an effort to join together and create awareness about cancer prevention. All fans wearing pink to Saturday's game will receive a $1 admission price.
