Cullowhee, N.C. - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Lady Catamount Basketball are asking their fans to "think pink" during the weekend of January 26-28th in support of all coaches in women's basketball who are battling cancer. In an effort to join together to educate and create awareness about cancer prevention, all Catamount fans coming to the WCU women's basketball game this Saturday versus Wofford (4:00 pm tip-off) who are wearing pink will receive a $1 admission price. In addition, all fans will be given a pink ribbon to wear during the game.
Also on Saturday, as part of the "Let's Read with the Lady Cats" reading program, all kids ages twelve and under will receive free admission to the game. "Let's Read with the Lady Cats" is a program geared to promote reading and higher education. Almost 400 participants from seven different schools in Jackson and Haywood counties participated in this year's "Let's Read" program and read almost 115,000 pages during their holiday breaks. During halftime, the Lady Cats will be recognizing some of those winning participants.
In conjunction with the festivities on Saturday, the WCU Dance Team will conduct a clinic geared for girls, ages 6-12, Saturday at historic Reid Gymnasium. The clinic will begin at 8:30 am and run until noon, and will include a performance during WCU's women's basketball game.
The clinic will cost $20 and all proceeds will be used toward travel costs for the WCU Dance Team's annual trip to the Southern Conference men's and women's basketball championships in North Charleston, S.C. For more information, contact WCU Dance Team Advisor, Shauna Sage, at 227-7069.
Western Carolina (13-7, 7-2 SoCon) opens the second half of its 2006-07 Southern Conference schedule by hosting the Terriers (9-10, 3-6 SoCon) at 4:00 pm in the Ramsey Center. The Lady Catamounts downed Wofford, 76-67, in Spartanburg back on Dec. 17 in the SoCon opener for each school. Saturday's game will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network and can be heard in Western North Carolina on WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee or online at www.WWCUFM.com.
