Kristen Feemster Blogs About Playing Samford and Chattanooga This Weekend

Jan. 9, 2009

NOTE: Western Carolina women's basketball tips off at 4 p.m. Saturday against Samford and is part of a Catamount doubleheader as the men face Elon at 7 p.m. in the Ramsey Center.

It's the start of a new year and our team is doing much better. Things are not perfect and the wins haven't been pretty but we are finding a way to get better every day. We've won each of our games since the Christmas break, and every win has been extremely significant for the Lady Cats.

Our first win came against UNC-Wilmington. Last year we lost in overtime to UNCW by a last second shot from half-court. They played a great game that day and no one has forgotten how it felt to walk off their court with a loss. We were ready to get the chance to play them this year.

The next win was against Appalachian State. Anytime Western Carolina and Appalachian State play it's going to be a great game. We knew we had to come out and play our hardest from the beginning. I was impressed by the play of our freshmen Kaila'Shea Menendez, Brittany Ferguson, Diamond Hunnicutt, and TT Belcher. They have come a long way since our first few games and we're getting quality minutes from them.

Our most recent win came against Furman University. The last time we played them the game went into two overtimes and we came out on top. We knew Furman would be focused and ready to play just as we were when we played UNC-Wilmington. Kellie told us to be prepared and match their intensity. We were down going into halftime but rallied back to pull out the win 83-74.

Overall, I'm excited about where this team is going. We have two big games this weekend against Samford and Chattanooga at home. In order to be competitive and win, the team must really focus in practice. Everything we do is important as we prepare for our games. We also will continue to need quality play from our freshmen. The majority of the teams we play use six to eight people each game. For us to be able to play everyone on the team will be extremely beneficial. After two games on the road, we look forward to seeing all of our fans at the games this weekend. I can't explain how much your support is needed and appreciated. "Go Cats"
