Wilmington, N.C. - The Western Carolina (4-2) women's basketball team defeated West Virginia (2-3) in the first game of the Beach Blast Tournament, Saturday, December 2.

WCU pulled away from West Virginia early in the second half, using a 24-14 run to overcome a 10 point deficit. The Lady Cats landed six free throws to tie the game at 46-46 by the 15:25 mark. Jumpers by Christy Blackwell and April Fleck at 15:11 and 14:52 put WCU in the lead by four (50-46).

Western Carolina was led by junior Laura Echols who had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the game. Fleck and Blackwell joined Echols in double figures with 19 and 11 points respectively.

Western will play UNC Wilmington in the championship game Sunday, December 3 at 3:00 p.m. UNC Wilmington is the 1999 Beach Blast champion.
