Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's basketball team defeated the Asheville Rage 93-39 in the team's second exhibition game of the season Thursday night in the Ramsey Center.
The Lady Cats went into halftime with a 28-point lead that was pushed to 40 just seven minutes into the second half. A layup by freshman Nicole Loggins gave the Cats a 54-point lead and the biggest of the night.
The Lady Cats jumped out to a 14-7 lead after the first five minutes of play in the first half. They would extend the lead to 17 with back-to-back jump shots at the 9:50 and 9:36 mark. A pair of free throws by junior Laura Echols put the Cats up by 30 with 54 seconds remaining in the game.
Three Catamounts recorded double figures including a career-high game by freshman Tiffany Hamm with 23 points. It was followed by Echols with the team's only double double, 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Marsha McGillivary and senior April Fleck added 15 and 11 points respectively.
Western Carolina out-rebounded Asheville 52-35 in the victory as well as recording 18 steals to Asheville's eight.
The Rage was led by former Catamount Willow Russell with 14 points while Tammy McEntire, from Catawba added 11.
The Lady Cats will be on the road for the first regular season game against Winthrop, Saturday, November 18. Game time is set for 4:00 pm. They will return home Tuesday, November 21 for a double-header game with the men's team. The women will take on Furman at 6:00 pm while the men will play Lee at 8:00 pm.
