DAVIDSON, N.C. - Western Carolina took home its first Southern Conference victory of the 2000-01 season with an 83-74 win over Davidson Tuesday night.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 8-3 before Western Carolina could even muster a field goal, but the Catamounts responded in grand fashion by going on a 16-4 run to take a 19-12 lead with 10:31 left in the half. Western Carolina continued its offensive attack on the Wildcats and pushed the lead to 36-24 on a three-point basket from Katie Scott with 2:57 to go in the half. The Catamounts continued to answer any Davidson attempt to cut into the lead with additional points and took a 43-28 lead into the break. Scott led the Catamounts with 11 points at the half while freshman guard Ashley Hallsted (San Mateo, Calif.) led Davidson with seven points.
Davidson came out on fire to start the second stanza and quickly erased the 15-point halftime deficit to just three points, 49-46, with 15:03 left in the game. Taylor and Magette, who scored four and 10 points respectively, keyed the Wildcats quick 18-6 run. However, the Catamounts countered with five quick points to push the lead back to eight, 54-46. Davidson cut the lead to four points on a pair of free throws from junior forward Kelly Copland (Alamo, Calif.) with 9:59 to play, but were unable to get any closer on the next four possessions as the teams traded baskets.
With 5:37 left in regulation, Magette cut the lead to three points, 68-65, and then brought the Wildcats within just two points o the next possession as she converted the first of two free throws. Western Carolina responded and scored the next nine points to push the lead back to 11 with just over three minutes left in the game.
Davidson managed to cut the lead back to five points shortly thereafter, but was unable to get any closer for the remainder of the game. The Catamouts sealed the game with their offensive rebounding as they grabbed five rebounds off their own missed free throws over the final five minutes of play.

Laura Echols with 18 points, she also recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. Joining Echols with a double-double was freshman
Tiffany Hamm with 17 points and led the team in rebounding with 15. Also scoring in double figures for Western was Scott with 14 and sophomore
Christy Blackwell with 10.
Western Carolina will next travel to Wofford Saturday, January 6. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
