Recruiting. The backbone of any successful collegiate program is recruiting. Shellie Greenman serves as the recruiting coordinator for Western Carolina and faces the task of organizing all recruiting efforts.

This fall, on September 3, WCU Athletics Director Jeff Compher announced that Greenman had been promoted as the Associate Head Coach for women's basketball. Greenman is entering her seventh year serving on WCU's coaching staff; her fourth year under head coach Beth Dunkenberger.

"This is a well deserved promotion for Shellie," Compher said. "She does a lot of behind the scenes work for our women's basketball program that has really paid off for the team and this university. She is also a very positive person who is great to have around our department."

As the recruiting coordinator for Western Carolina, Greenman faces the task of organizing all recruiting efforts. She is also responsible for coaching the guards and working with the team's offense. She has coached Christy Blackwell, who led the SoCon in steals (90) as well as assist average (4.8) in 2000-01. Greenman has also coached Ki-Ki Glass , who led the conference in assists (117) in 2001-02 and was named to the league's All-Freshman team. Additionally, under Greenman's guidance, Yoneko Allen led the league in 3-point field goals in 2002-03 with 67, among other accomplishments on and off the court. “Shellie has been instrumental in finding the right players to help us build our championship program,” Dunkenberger said. “It takes more than just talented athletes to win. We need players who are dedicated and hard working, who are competitive, who put our team first and who are also good people. Shellie searches far and wide to find those special people.”

Greenman’s first three signees during the spring of 2000 at WCU received several honors. All three were named to the school’s academic honor roll, with two players achieving perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Tiffany Hamm was named the Southern Conference Rookie of the Year in 2001, leading all freshmen in the league in scoring. Greenman also coordinated the signing of this year’s newcomers, which includes Sigita Maleraite (Lithuania), Erin May (Marion, N.C.) and Lori Tanner (Knoxville, Tenn.)

Greenman has been coaching at the Division I level for 15 years now. She worked previously at Western Carolina under Head Coach Gary Peters from 1993-96. Greenman has also completed stints at Miami University (Ohio) and Southern Conference rival, Chattanooga. She has the impressive distinction of having recruited a player who was named the Conference Rookie of the Year at each of the three schools.

Greenman earned her Bachelor’s degree in 1988 from Emory and Henry College and went on to earn her Master’s in 1990 at Virginia Tech. At the start of her career, Greenman worked as an assistant coach with Dunkenberger for five years at Virginia Tech. A four-year letterwinner in basketball at Emory and Henry, Greenman led her team to the ODAC Conference Championship in 1988 as she was named to the all-tournament team. The daughter of Bill and Joan Greenman, she originally hails from Blacksburg, Va. In her spare time, she enjoys playing with her nephews, Austin and Jake.
