Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina head men's golf coach Carter Cheves has announced the signing of a pair of student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to play golf for the Catamounts beginning next fall. The two North Carolina prospects, J.T Poston (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory HS) and Charlie Kilzer (Charlotte, N.C. / Butler HS) inked NLIs with WCU.
For Cheves, who is amidst his first full season as head coach at Western Carolina, it is his second recruiting class. A year ago, he brought in four signees in arguably the best overall recruiting class in school history.
Poston, who was the 2010 North Carolina High School 3-A State Champion at Hickory HS, is currently ranked 14th among all juniors in the state of North Carolina. He played alongside current WCU freshman golfer, Greg Bunner, in the 2010 Big "I" National, firing rounds of 73-76-71-74 to finish tied for 12th overall.
A native of Hickory N.C., Poston was a two-time All-Catawba Valley Athletic Conference (CVAC) selection and a year ago, was named the 2010 Northwest 3A/4A Conference Player of the Year. Other top amateur career finishes include a fifth-place tie at the 2009 North Carolina Junior Championship and tied for 17th at the 2010 Dogwood State Junior.
Kilzer will enter the Catamount golf program with a combination of solid junior and amateur tournament results. He reached the quarterfinal round of the 2010 North Carolina Junior Championship and captured a Top-15 finish in the Charlotte City Amateur with rounds of 73-71-77.
Over the past year, the Charlotte native had four, top 5 finishes and was named to the Charlotte Observer All-Area Team, SW4A All County Team (2nd yr) and was a Carolina Weekly Player of the Year. Prior to his senior season, was 19th ranked (class of 2011) in the state of North Carolina.
Cheves and the Catamounts will open up the spring portion of their 2010-11 season February 20-22 at the Wexford Plantation in Hilton Head, S.C., an event hosted by Francis Marion University.
