Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina senior Ricky Stout was today named the Southern Conference's Men's Golfer of the Month for his play during the month of October. Stout claimed his first-ever collegiate individual medalist honors after winning the Firestone Invitational at the prestigious Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio back on Oct. 12-13.
The October honor - the first in Stout's career - makes him just the second Catamount all-time to garner monthly plaudits from the SoCon, joining eight-time golfer of the month, Matt Cook, who claimed one honor for October during his career.
Stout led the Catamounts at both tournaments in the month of October, and garnered national publicity from GolfWeek collegiate writer, Lance Ringler, after scoring his first-ever collegiate individual championship at the Firestone Intercollegiate. The New Bern, N.C., native carded a low round of 69 on the first day, following it up with two-under, 70, and even-par 72 for a five-under 211 to win the event.
Stout again paced WCU with a 25th-place finish at the Aldila Scenic City Invitational after shooting a two-over 218 that featured a two-under 70 and an even par 72 before a four-over, 76, in the final round.
All told, over the six rounds during the month of October, Stout averaged 71.5 strokes per round including a seasonal-low 69 in the opening round at Firestone. He continues to rank inside the all-time top five in school history with a career stroke average under 75.
Western Carolina concluded the fall portion of its schedule earlier this week at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate, posting a sixth-place finish in the 18-team field. WCU will now turn its attention to the spring season and the opening Wexford Invitational, hosted by Francis Marion at the Wexford Plantation in Hilton Head, S.C., Feb. 21-23.
