WCU Intercollegiate Round One Pairings
Cashiers, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team is set to host the WCU Intercollegiate, presented by Macon Bank, this Sunday, Nov. 4 through Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the par 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Cashiers. The 36-hole event will begin with practice rounds on Sunday, with tee times for the opening round on Monday beginning at 9:30 am (times subject to change due to frost).
In addition to Western Carolina, the 16-team field includes six teams from the Southern Conference, including defending tournament team champion, Wofford College. Other conference schools include Appalachian State, Davidson, Elon and Furman. The remainder of the field includes last year's runner-up, Winthrop; 2004 champion, Charleston Southern; two-time runner-up Radford; Vanderbilt from the SEC; Belmont, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Jacksonville, and future SoCon-member, Samford, from the OVC.
This is the second year that the WCU Intercollegiate has been held at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley as Charleston Southern carded a six-under, 570, to edge Radford by six strokes back in 2004.
Western's best finish over the past three seasons in the tournament was a runner-up showing by Keith Tyburski back in 2004. All-time leading scorer, senior Matt Cook, has an eighth-place in '05 and a third-place tie last year just ahead of junior teammate Andres Cuenca in a tie for sixth. As a team, the Catamounts' best finish was third in 2004 at the same course.
Western Carolina is coming off three-straight top 5 finishes, including consecutive runner-up showings at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate at the Country Club of South Carolina and a school-record, 54-hole scoring at the Xavier Invitational in Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio. Most recently, the Catamounts finished fourth at the Mizuno Southbridge Intercollegiate two weeks ago.
Results from the WCU Intercollegiate, presented by Macon Bank, will be made available online at www.CatamountSports.com at the conclusion of each round.
