LIVE SCORING of the U.S. Amateur

Pinehurst, N.C. - Former Catamount men's golfer Matt Cook countered three bogeys with five birdies on Monday to stand tied for second in stroke play of the 2008 United State Amateur Championship held at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. He is tied with five others at two-under, 68, just one stroke in arrears of the two-way tie for first-place between Wesley Bryan of Chapin, S.C., and Andrew Putnam of University Place, Wash.

Cook played par 70, 7,030-yard Pinehurst No. 4 on Monday, and will continue stroke play on the par 70, 7,281-yard Pinehurst No. 2 on Tuesday.

The Murphy, N.C., and two-time Southern Conference individual medalist, opened with a bogey on the par 5, 398 first hole on the No. 4 course. He played the next three holes even before scoring a birdie on par 4 fifth to move back to even. He dropped his score below par with a birdie on the 518-yard, par 5 ninth to make the turn at one-under.

Cook moved to two-under with a birdie on the par 3, 12th before a bogey on No. 14 brought him back to one-under.

Consecutive birdies on the par 4, 16th and par 5, 17th, left him poised to stand atop the leaderboard at three-under. However, a bogey on the par 5, 453-yard 18th relegated him into a tie for second with an opening round 68.

Cook needs to finish among the top 64 individuals on Tuesday to advance into Wednesday's Match Play brackets at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
