The Players Amateur Championship

Bluffton, S.C. - Matt Cook, a rising senior on the Western Carolina men's golf team, shot a four-round total of 283 to finish in a three-way tie for 23rd at The Eighth Annual Players' Amateur held at the Belfair Golf Club. Cook was among a total of 87 amateur golfers, and 70 of which made the cut on Friday, to compete for the tournament title.

Proceeds from this year's prestigious amateur championship benefited the Boys and Girls Club of the Lowcountry and The Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA).

The four-round, four-day event was won by Rickie Fowler of Murrieta, Calif., who shot a 24-under 264 to win the individual event by two strokes over Michael Thompson, who plays collegiate golf at the Univ. of Alabama.

After carding an opening round of 69, Cook shot a one-under 71 and a two-under 70 on Saturday before wrapping up the event with a one-over 73 on Sunday to finish at 283 for the event.

Cook, who posted a career-best finish of 46th at the NCAA East Regional last season, currently sits atop Western's all-time career scoring chart. During the 2006-07 campaign, he posted seven top 10 finishes, including three-consecutive individual medalist honors during the fall portion of the season and a fourth-place showing at last month's Southern Conference Championship. The All-SoCon performer and two-time SoCon Player of the Month this season was also twice recognized by Golf World, making its mid-season "All-American" team and was named "Most Surprising Player" in the nation by the publication.
