Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina men's golf rounded out its 2010-11 incoming class by the addition of Greg Bunner (Gastonia, N.C. / Highland Tech). Bunner joins earlier signees Jack Walsh (Lawrenceville, Ga. / Peachtree Ridge HS), Collin Witiak (Columbia, S.C. / Dutch Fork HS) and Michael Fitzgerald (Flossmoor, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmor HS) to round out Western Carolina men's golf recruiting class.
Bunner, who was named the Southern Piedmont 1-A/2-A Conference Player of the Year, is a two-time, 1-A North Carolina High School State Boy's Golf Champion, mirroring another former Catamount standout, Matt Cook. Bunner successfully defended his title back in May at the Longleaf Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C., firing rounds of 73 and 69 to lead his high school to a runner-up finish. As a junior, won the 1-A state individual title by eight strokes at the Siler City Country Club
Earlier this spring, he competed for the North Carolina squad in the Carolina's-Georgia Junior, finishing in a tie for sixth as an individual with a four-over, 148, that included six birdies over 36 holes. Other tournament highlights include a final round 66 at the Joe Cheves Junior held at Mimosa Hills to finish in a tie for fourth in a field of 78 that included fellow WCU commitments, Witiak and Walks.
Overall, Bunner is currently ranked 14th among youth amateurs in the state of North Carolina.
WCU is still amidst a search for both a men's and a women's head golf coach. Former men's coach, Gorham Bradley, stepped down as coach to pursue a full-time role with the Catamount Club, while longtime women's head coach, Steve Lott, announced his retirement prior to the 2010 Southern Conference Championship.
