Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina senior men's golfer Matt Cook was today named to the NCAA Division I PING All-South Region team as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). He is now eligible for the PING All-America honors which should be released in early June.

Cook was one of just three golfers from the Southern Conference recognized, joined by Jonathan Hodge and Derek Rende from conference champion, Chattanooga.

PING All-Region teams consist of the top 15 individuals in their region in the Individual Ranking System. Additionally, any player ranked in the top 75 according to Golfstat or the Sagarin rankings not included in their region's top 15 are added to their All-Region team.

This season, Cook averaged an even-par, 72, through 12 events and 34 total rounds to post the second-best, single-season round in school history. All told, the Murphy, N.C., native holds four of the top five single-season scoring averages including the lowest three all-time.

Cook concluded his four-year playing career at Western Carolina as the only four-time, All-SoCon selection and as the school's all-time career stroke average leader (72.11). He recorded 25 top 10 individual finishes including 18 inside the top five with nine individual medalist honors, twice garnering the top finish at the SoCon Men's Golf Championship.

The 2006 SoCon Player of the Year, Cook made three appearances in the NCAA East Regional, twice as an individual and this past season as a member of the Catamount squad which earned the school's first-ever, at-large bid into the field.

Last season's WCU men's golf roster included three of the top 10 single-season rounds in school history, while also boasting the top five career scorers in the history of the program. The Catamounts posted seven, top five finishes as a team while posting an impressive 292.9 collective stroke average.
