Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina men’s golf program was one of 22 Southern Conference programs representing eight full-time conference members to earn the annual APR Public Recognition Award from the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) late last week.
The award is given to athletic teams ranking in the top 10 percent of Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores within Division I in their respective sports.
Teams honored by the NCAA earned multiple Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent for their respective sports. The most recent APR score is based on the scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years or cohorts. The public recognition awards are part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and are intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
Under the direction of second-year head coach Tim Eckberg, Western Carolina men’s golf was among nine different SoCon men’s programs across six different sports to earn the Public Recognition Award, while 13 women’s programs were honored. The Catamount men’s golf team was joined by fellow conference golf programs from ETSU, Mercer, and Wofford to earn the Public Recognition Award.
