Cullowhee, N.C. -
Fresh off his second individual championship at the 2008 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship, senior Matt Cook was today named the conference's Men's Golfer of the Month for April by the league office.
Cook, who fired rounds of 67 and 69 in the last two rounds to shoot eight-under over the final 36 holes, claimed his second Southern Conference individual title to become the first Catamount ever to win multiple titles. The Murphy, N.C., native also became just the eighth golfer in conference history to ever win individual medalist honors more than once. His 16 birdies over the 54-hole event paced the tournament.
Also last month, Cook led the Catamounts with a sixth-place finish at the UK Bluegrass Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky. He posted three consecutive rounds of 75 to help Western Carolina to a fifth-place team finish.
On the year, Cook led WCU in eight of the 11 seasonal events with three top five finishes, including the first-place at the SoCon Championship, and six inside the top 10. He finished with a seasonal scoring average of 72.26, third all-time behind marks he set in 2005-06 (2nd, 72.22) and 2006-07 (1st, 71.81). Cook's career stroke average of 72.19 continues to rank as the best all-time in WCU school history.
Cook and his Catamount teammates will await word on an at-large bid into the NCAA Men's Golf Championship field, which begins with regional play on May 15-17.
