WCU Golf in Fourth at SoCon Championships, Shooting Even Par Through the 2nd Round

Greenville, S.C. - Western Carolina shaved four strokes off its first day total and sits in fourth place after two rounds at the 2002 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships, held at Furman University's Golf Course. The Cats are at even par 576, five strokes off third and 12 strokes off first.

Western is being led by senior Greg Lewis,who has firsed consecutive rounds of 69. Lewis is in second place individually and his rounds of 69 ties a WCU record. His six under 138 is three strokes off first. Western freshman Andrew Paduch is also having an outstnding championship, as he is tied for eighth at one under. Lee Cline is one over par after two rounds to tie for 16th.

Furman's Paladin golf team fired a second consecutive 282 to pull ahead of College of Charleston by three strokes with one round left to play in the Southern Conference Golf Championships. Furman's two-day total is 564, with College of Charleston at 567 after the two teams tied in the first round on Friday. The winner of the Southern Conference Championships receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, slated for May 16-18.

In the race for medalist honors, C of C's Brunson (135) holds a three-stroke lead over Furman's Sligh and Lewis (138). The Paladins' Kirk Satterfield is in fourth with a 139 total, while Wofford's Jon Stephenson and Georgia Southern's David Elmore are tied for fifth at 140. Stephenson and Chattanooga's Nick Bamber each fired a 67 to earn low round honors on Saturday.

The third and final round of the 66th Southern Conference Golf Championship will begin Sunday at 8 a.m. at the 6,800-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf Course. The tournament leaders will tee off last, beginning at 9:40 a.m. on hole number one. If Furman can hold on and win the SoCon Title, it will be the Paladins 12th in history, and first since 1997. A victory on Sunday would be the first for College of Charleston since the Cougars joined the league in 1999.
