Etowah, N.C. - Western Carolina's Rylan Lanham was declared the individual medalist at the weather-shortened, Independent Collegiate Invitational as two days of constant rain forced several holes to become unplayable, cancelling the final day of the tournament on Tuesday at the par 72, 6,796-yard Etowah Valley Country Club.

Playing unattached as one of four WCU individuals, Lanham, a native of Murphy, N.C., becomes the first Catamount to claim medalist honors this season.

First-round team leader, Brevard College, took home the team trophy as tournament champions, after shooting 291 on Monday to finish three strokes ahead of Barton College (294). Carson-Newman finished third, seven-strokes off the pace at 298, followed by Wingate (301) and Montevallo rounding out the top five after carding a 302 on Monday.

In addition to Lanham, WCU had three others competing individually at the event one-hour away from campus. The Catamounts' Cody Walker finished tied for 15th after firing a three-over 75 through 18 holes, with Benjy Davey (t-67th, 82) and Caleb Marsh (t-72nd, 84) rounding out Western's competitors in the 86-golfer field.

Western Carolina will turn its full attention to the 2009 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship, April 19-21 at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. The 54-hole event will be spread over three days.
