Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina senior Jackson Bishop has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from March 28 to April 3.
Weekly award selections are made by the league office from nominations submitted by the media relations office of each conference school.
The honor is the first of the season for the Catamounts – and the 11th weekly award for WCU since 2001 when the SoCon began honoring its top performing golfers of the week. Bishop’s first weekly honor is the first for WCU since mid-April of 2015.
Jackson finished among a three-way tie for first at The Manor Intercollegiate at The Manor Golf Club in Farmville, Va., on Saturday, carding a 2-over-par 218 for the tournament before falling on the second playoff hole to determine medalist honors. Brandon Weaver of tournament host Longwood won the playoff, while Jackson’s Catamount teammate Dylan MacQueen was also involved in the tie and playoff.
Jackson, a Gainesville, Ga., native, opened with a round of 1-over 73 on Friday before turning in a 4-under 68 in the day’s second circuit to claim the lead at the end of the first two rounds. His season-best 68 was the only round in the 60s in the 70-man field over the course of the three-round tournament.
He closed with a 5-over 77 on Saturday but remained in first, turning in a par on the first playoff hole before notching a bogey on the second as Weaver claimed medalist honors. The first-place finish was the first of Jackson’s career and was his second career top-five finish.
All told, Jackson helped Western Carolina to a third-place team finish in the 13-team field.
The Catamounts wrap up their regular season at the Gary Koch Invitational at Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, N.C., on April 9-10, before turning their attention to the Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C., on April 22-24.
