CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina men's golfer Andres Cuenca has been named Southern Conference Men's Golfer of the Week as announced by the league office Wednesday.
Cuenca earned his first-ever individual medalist honors, leading both days at the Wofford Invitational at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C. Each of his three rounds were par or lower, shooting 72 on Tuesday to win by two strokes.
Cuenca, making his return after missing last week's Furman Intercollegiate, shot a three-round 208 which ties for the second-lowest, 54-hole in WCU school history to claim individual medalist honors. The sophomore posted an eight-under par, 70-66-72--208, which tied for the seventh-lowest tally in tournament history. His final score is the lowest for an individual since Virginia's Steve Marino registered a nine-under par 207 to win the 2002 championship.
On the season, Cuenca now has six, top 10 individual finishes including a runner-up finish at Liberty's Frank Landrey Invitational back in mid-October of 2006 and a third-place tally earlier this spring at the Samford Invitational.
