Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior J.T. Poston has been named the Southern Conference men's golfer of the week for all competition from March 5-11. The selection is made by the league office.
The weekly honor is the first in the career for Poston - and the first for a Catamount men's golfer since Tanner Briele claimed the weekly honors in March of 2009.
Poston tied for fifth at Auburn's Tiger Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, firing a 211 over the three rounds at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala. The 15-team, 81-golfer field featured three top-50 teams in No. 28 Auburn, No. 42 Kennesaw State and No. 38 Memphis.
Poston matched his career-low round by firing a 6-under-par 66 in the first round and followed that up with a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for third after the first day of competition. The Hickory, N.C., native turned in an even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round for his final position and a 70.33 stroke average for the week.
The top-five finish was Poston's sixth of the season - and his seventh top 10 individual finish. For his career, the Hickory, N.C., native has 11 top five career finishes and 18 top 10s.
The Catamounts will return to action March 28-30 at the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.
Also nominated: Casey Komline (Appalachian State), Bryce Howell (Furman), Roy Dixon (UNCG), Chris Robb (Chattanooga) and Chandler Brazeal (Wofford).
