Western Carolina Leads Vanderbilt by Five Strokes at WCU Intercollegiate, presented by Macon Bank

Cashiers, N.C. - Western Carolina juniors Andres Cuenca and Dustin Furnari stand tied atop the leader board with identical opening-round scores of 66 to lead the Catamounts to a five-stroke advantage over second-place Vanderbilt at the WCU Intercollegiate, presented by Macon Bank. Western shot 278 versus the Commodores 283 on Monday at the par 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

Western's first round score of 278 is its' second-lowest of this fall, while also ranking as its second-best round in school history.

Radford shot 288 as a team in the opening round to stand third behind Western and Vanderbilt, with High Point five-strokes in arrears at 293 in fourth. Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb each shot 295 to stand tied for fifth entering Tuesday's final round.

Nine individuals shot below par through the first 18 holes, paced by the pair Catamounts at five-under, 66. Cuenca leads the tournament with seven birdies, while Furnari is tied with three others with six. Behind the front-running duo are three golfers tied for third as Samford's Martin Bunt, Vanderbilt's Jon Curran and Radford's Hampton Ballard each carded two-under, 69.

Western placed a trio of golfers in a tie for 21st-place at two-over, 73. Both senior Matt Cook and freshman Caleb Marsh made the turn at even par, 36, before shooting two-over on the back. Sophomore Ricky Stout turned at two-over, 73, and played the back nine even to tie his teammates.

Competing as individuals, WCU sophomores Michael Chapin and Benjy Davey stand 10th and 40th, respectively. Chapin shot an even-par 71, while Davey was four-over at 75 on Monday. The only WCU men's golfer not in action is red-shirt sophomore Cody Walker who is out with a back injury which has forced him to miss the majority of the fall season.

Final round action from the Country Club of Sapphire Valley begins with tee times at 9:30 am on Tuesday morning. Western Carolina's first golfer off will be Stout at 10:58 from the first tee and will continue through Cuenca at 11:30 am. The Catamount individuals will tee off on No. 10 at approximately 11:16 am.
