Etowah, N.C. - Led by sophomore transfer Andres Cuenca's two-under 70 on Saturday, the Western Carolina men's golf team leads by a stroke at the WCU Intercollegiate after shooting an opening round 292 on Saturday at the par 72, 7,056-yard Etowah Valley Golf Club.
Cuenca shot a pair of 35's over the first 18 holes on Saturday to lead the Catamounts. Junior teammate Matt Cook shot two-under, 34, over the front nine but was two-over on the back to stand at even par, tied for third. Freshman Michael Chapin is tied for eighth after the first round giving Western three in the top 10. Chapin, a native of Roswell, Ga., shot 73.
Rounding out the order for the Cats were freshmen Benjy Davey in a tie for 34th (77) and Cody Walker, tied for 47th after carding 79.
Western leads both Wofford and Tennessee Tech, who are tied for second, by one stroke, while Winthrop stands fourth, five strokes in arrears with High Point rounding out the top five with a first round team score of 298.
The tournament will conclude with the final round on Sunday morning.
