Cook (Murphy, N.C.) carded rounds of 68-70-68 at the CSU Fall Invitational and his 206 is two strokes better than Blake Wray's total of 208, set last fall at the James Madison Invitational. While winning three straight events, Cook has been 32 strokes under par over seven rounds. That total was bolstered by Cook making 16 birdies over the past two days, thanks to scoring a tournament-best, four-under on the par 3's and three-under on the par 4's. He was also three-under par on the par 5's at the event.
Freshman Cody Walker played a key role in Western's jump on Tuesday. The Lenoir, N.C., native shot a season-low 68 and finished the 54-holes with a score of 221, moving up 14 spots to place 17th. For the tournament, Walker was five-under on the par 5's, which was the second-lowest total for the event, and reeled of 10 birdies. Sophomore Andres Cuenca, who moved up to 22nd in the most recent NCAA Division I rankings this week, fired an even-par 72 on Tuesday and placed 16th with his total of 220.
Senior
Tripp Morrow and freshman
Patrick Lamb rounded out the scoring for Western. Morrow shot 77 in the final round and placed 39th with a 54-hole total of 236. Lamb shot 82 and placed 38th with his total of 235. Fellow freshman
Ricky Stout played in the tournament, but his scores did not count toward the team total. However, he improved each round, shooting 81-76-73 and tied for 31st place with his 229.
South Carolina won the CSU Fall Invitational, shooting 283 on Tuesday and finishing with an 861. Jacksonville, who has two players ranked among the nation's top 100, placed second (872). Other than the Gamecocks' 283 on Tuesday, Western's 285 was five strokes better than any other team in the field.
Western will then return to Cullowhee to prepare for its annual WCU Intercollegiate, played this year on Nov. 4-5 at Hendersonville's Etowah Valley Country Club.
