Waynesville, N.C. - Valdosta State made up 11 strokes, and then some, in firing a second-round 300 Tuesday to win the WCU-Laurel Ridge Intercollegiate with a two-day total of 610. Valdosta State also took home individual medallist honors as Chris Erwin shot an even par 72 each day for a 36-hole total of 144.
Appalachian State, the leader after day one, shot 315 on day two to finish second with a 614, followed by Wright State (617), Murray State (630), Western Carolina (631) and The Citadel (656).
Weather conditions at Waynesville's Laurel Ridge Country Club were not as severe on Tuesday as they were the previous day, but the field average was still nearly eight strokes over par.
Murray State's Josh Vasilko, who was playing as an individual, matched Erwin's even par 72 to finish runner-up. Vasilko fired a 75 on day one to finish the event three over par (147). Jesse Hutchins (Wright State) carded a 73-75=148 to place third, while a quintet of golfers tied for fourth with a two-day total of 150.
Western Carolina placed three golfers among the individual top 15, including Matt Flueckiger (11th; 156), Chase Kress (12th; 157) and Ryan Barry (14th; 158). WCU freshman Blake Wray finished 17th (160), while Tim Eckberg was 32nd (171).
The Catamounts will return to action Nov. 9-10 when it hosts the Shootout at Burning Ridge in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
