Waynesville, N.C. - Tough weather conditions meant high scores would be the norm on the first day of the WCU-Laurel Ridge Intercollegiate. However, Appalachian State was the lone team to break 300 and will take an 11-stroke lead over the six-team field into day two.
The individual field average was 80.97, which is nearly nine strokes over par, with two holes at Waynesville's Laurel Ridge Country Club playing one-and-a-half strokes over par.
Despite a constant rain and cold temperatures, three players share the individual lead, each shooting an even-par 72 for the first 18 holes. David Thomas (App State), Chris Erwin (Valdosta State) and Brandon Henson (Murray State) share the top spot. Wright State's Jesse Hutchins and John Schones carded a 73 and 74, respectively, while App State's Drew Davis also fired a 74 to round out the top five.
Host team Western Carolina turned in a 317 to rank fifth and was led by freshman Matt Flueckiger's 77, which ties him for 10th. Ryan Barry (78; 14th) Chase Kress (80; 17th), Blake Wray (82; 19th-t) and Tim Eckberg (88; 32nd-t) rounded out Western's scoring.
Day two of the annual event will get underway Tuesday morning at approximately 8:00 am, with award ceremonies scheduled for approximately 3:30 pm.
