Western Carolina junior transfer Ryan Booth carded an opening-round, four-under 67 on Friday to stand in third place, two strokes off the individual lead at the Mason Rudolph Championship being held at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Booth paced the Catamounts which carded a 10-over 294 through the opening 18 holes to stand tied for 11th entering Saturday's second round at the par-71, 7,100-yard course.
Booth currently leads the tournament in par-4 scoring, averaging four-under (3.56) and is tied for second with six birdies.
WCU's remaining scorers on Friday were all freshmen. Rookie Greg Bunner is tied for 48th after shooting a three-over, 74, while classmates Jack Walsh is tied for 58th (75) and Collin Witiak is tied for 74th after carding a seven-over, 78.
Catamount junior Kyle Wilson, who led the team at its season-opening event, withdrew from the opening round without carding a score.
Overall, Memphis and Oklahoma both carded first round scores of 10-under, 274, on Friday to lead the 17-team field. Mississippi is eight strokes in arrears in third place, followed by a two-way tie for fourth place between South Carolina and Vanderbilt at one-over, 285. WCU shot 294 and is tied with South Alabama for 11th, two strokes outside the top 10.
Individually, Oklahoma's Will Kropp shot an opening round 65 and holds a one-stroke lead over Jack Belote (66) from Memphis. Booth is third with a one-stroke advantage over a two-way tie for fourth-place between Charlie Grace from Vanderbilt and Carlson Cox from Memphis.
