Sunset Beach, S.C. - Western Carolina set two team records, but could not hold off host and tournament champion Elon at the annual Sea Trail Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at Sea Trail Resort. However, Catamount sophomore Matt Cook won his second tournament in a seven-day span, tying his own 54-hole school record by carding a 209 (72-68-69) and giving the Murphy, N.C., native seven top 10 finishes with three titles and one loss in a playoff in eight career events played. Cook beat out three others, each of whom turned in 54-hole scores of 211.

The Catamounts, who fired a school-record 281 in the second round, turned in a 289 in round three to post a 54-hole score of 862, which shatters the previous school record by nine strokes. Western's 281 in round two came on the strength of all five golfers shooting under par in a single round for the first time in school history. Cook led the way with his 68, followed by 71's by Blake Wray, Tripp Morrow, Matt Dowdy and Bill Forcier.

On Sunday, Elon had three players shoot in the 60's to erase a three-stroke deficit to the Cats through 36 holes to card a 275 in round three and finish with an 851 to win their own event. Western was followed by Pfeiffer (864), Wofford (874) and Radford (874).

Individually, not only did Cook tie his own school record with his 209, but Wray turned in 215 for 54 holes, which is his second-best career effort and the sixth-best 54-hole total in school history. Morrow's 219 stands as his second-best, 54-hole score and the 12th-best in WCU history. Also, with Morrow shooting 219, he lowers his career scoring average back below 75 (74.93), which is currently the best in WCU history. While Dowdy just missed the cutoff for making the WCU 54-hole top 17 list with his 222, he now has the career minimum 25 rounds played to enter the WCU individual career stroke average list at fifth (76.28).

The Western Carolina men's team will return to action Oct. 10-11 at the James Madison Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va. at the Longview Golf Club.
