Playing in just his seventh collegiate tournament, Western Carolina sophomore Matt Cook (Murphy, N.C./Murphy HS) finished an event as the low scorer for the third time, carding a 54-hole total of 209 to set a WCU record for best three-round score in school history. The Catamounts fired a 295 on Tuesday and finished with a total of 884, which is the third-best 54-hole score in school history, to place 10th out of 14 teams in the 21st-annual Raines Development Group Intercollegiate Tournament at the Country Club of South Carolina.
Cook won the second event he ever played at Western this past spring, then fell in a playoff in the Cats' following event. He additionally has six top 10 finishes in his seven career events, including five top fives. Cook, who carded a final round 71, tied Jamie Kennedy of Jacksonville, with Cook garnering medalist honors by virtue of tournament tiebreaker rules.
The 210 by Cook better the previous WCU 54-hole record by one stroke, previously held by teammate Blake Wray, and is his best three-round score while at WCU by six strokes. Also, Cook and Kennedy were just two strokes off the tournament record of 207.
South Carolina-Aiken, the two-time NCAA Division II champion, fired a final-round, three-over-par 291 team score to finish the tournament at 15-under-par 849, smashing the tournament record score of 4-under-par 860. It additionally marked the seventh-straight tournament USCA has entered and won.
Host team Francis Marion placed second, eight strokes behind USCA, followed by Elon (863), South Carolina (864) and Old Dominion University (873).
Western's other three scorers on Tuesday each fired 75's with Bill Forcier tying for 46th overall (225), Wray tying for 59th (229) and Tripp Morrow tying for 60th (239). Matt Dowdy also tied for 60th, carding a 78 in round three.
Western Carolina will join the women's team Sept. 24-25 at the Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate, played at the Sea Trail Resort in Sunset Beach, S.C.
