Florence, S.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team played 36 holes in its first event of the 2005-06 season on Monday and stands in 10th place in the 14-team field at Francis Marion's Raines Development Group Intercollegiate, played at the Country Club of South Carolina. Sophomore Matt Cook turned in round of 71 and 68 to fire a 139 and sits two strokes off the individual lead.

Facing a tough field, Western's 589 through 36 holes is the program's eighth-best score all-time. Also, Cook's 139 stands as the fifth-best score by a Catamount through 36 holes all-time, while his 68 in round two is a career-low while at Western.

Two-time defending NCAA Division II champion South Carolina-Aiken, who has won its last six events entered, carded an 18-under par 558 through two rounds to hold an 11-stroke lead over host team Francis Marion. USC-Aiken had its top four golfers all place among the top 10 and all four shot below par in each of their two rounds. South Carolina, Elon and Kennesaw State are tied for third at 573, followed by Davidson, Charleston Southern, Old Dominion and Western.

Sophomore Bill Forcier was Western's second-best finisher through 36 holes, carding a 150 to tie for 51st. Fellow sophomore Matt Dowdy was two strokes behind Forcier and is tied for 56th, followed by Blake Wray (154, 64th) and Tripp Morrow (155, 65th-t).

The 54-hole event will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday, beginning with tee times at 8 a.m.
