Western Carolina turned in a three-day score of 893 to place ninth at the annual Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships, held April 20-22 at the Chattanooga (Tenn.) Golf and Country Club. It was WCU's best team score in school history.
East Tennessee State shot 831 to win the tournament by 19 strokes over the College of Charleston (850). Wofford's William McGirt won the individual medalist honors, defeating ETSU's Pat Beste in a sudden death playoff. Both players finished the tournament with a five-under 205.
The Catamounts were led by freshman Jason Huguet. The Greer, S.C., native shot rounds of 73-77-71=221 on the par 70 course to tie for 28th.Huguet's previous best single-round was a 75, while his previous best three-day total was 230. The 221 marked the third-best indidivual score in school history at the championships.
Western Carolina's scoring was rounded out by Greg Lewis (37th-tied, 225), Lee Cline (41st-tied, 225), Clay Kilgore (232, 46th-tied) and Bryan Sangid (4dth-tied, 233).
