Florence, S.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Andres Cuenca stands alone in third place while junior Matt Cook, the defending individual medalist at the event, is tied for fourth as the Catamounts concluded round one of three at the 2007 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina in a two-way tie for third place, just three strokes out of first.

Chattanooga, which is ranked 38th in the nation, shot a team total 293 to lead after the opening round. The Mocs are two strokes ahead of second place Wofford who finished with a first round 295, while Georgia Southern and Western Carolina round out the top three after both posted team rounds of 296.

Individually, Wofford's Garrett Medeiros leads the field after carding a 68 on the opening day, with Appalachian State's Taylor Hines sitting in second one stroke back with a 69. Cuenca is in third after shooting a 70 with Cook, Chattanooga's Mitch Brock and Elon's Justin Newton all posting 71 in round one to share the fourth spot.

Cuenca carded five birdies on the day and stood at three-under par with five holes to play, but back-to-back bogies on hole numbers five and six moved him to one-under before a birdie on the par 4 ninth dropped him back to two-under. Starting on the back nine like his teammates, Cook posted consecutive bogies on his first two holes before playing even par the remainder of the back, making the turn at two over. The Murphy, N.C., native finished with three birdies on the front to stand at one-under.

Cook led the first round in par 3 scoring at two-under (2.50), while Cuenca, who also ranked tied for second with five birdies on Sunday, also led the tournament with a two-under average on par 4 holes (3.80).

Rounding out Western's scorers were freshmen Cody Walker, tied for 29th with a first-round 77, and Ricky Stout tied for 33rd with a six-over, 78. Senior Tripp Morrow is one stroke in arrears of his rookie teammates with a 79 on Sunday, tied for 39th.

The second round of the championship will tee off at 8:30 am on Monday, April 23, with Western's first golfer, Morrow teeing off on hole number 10 at 9:10 am.
