Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship - Round 2 Results
Florence, S.C. - On the strength of the lowest round of the tournament, Western Carolina senior Matt Cook moved 19 positions Monday into a three-way tie for second place atop the leader board at the 72nd annual Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the par 72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina. Cook, who started the round in 21st place, posted a tourney-low, five-under round of 67 to be in the clubhouse at two-under, 142, just one stroke off the lead.
The final round is set for Tuesday morning with the first group teeing off at 8:00 am. Fans can follow all of the live scoring results by logging onto www.golfstatresults.com.
With three golfers inside the top 10 - and all five within the individual top 15 - nationally-ranked Chattanooga holds an eight-stroke lead over second place, College of Charleston, (571-to-579) growing its opening round, one-stroke advantage. Furman is third with a score of 586, followed by Western Carolina - which shaved two strokes off its opening day team score at 293 - and a two-way tie for fifth between UNC Greensboro and Elon at 589 to round out the top six teams.
Chattanooga's Ben Rickett leads the event with a two-day total of 141 (72-69), one stroke ahead of the three-way tie for the runner-up position consisting of Cook, along with first-round leader Nathan Stamey of UNC Greensboro (69-73=142) and Kim Soonam from the College of Charleston (71-71=142).
According to available records, Cook's round Monday is the lowest score ever fired by a Catamount at the conference championship event. He also tied his seasonal low shot back in mid-October at the Mizuno Southbridge Intercollegiate at the Southbridge Golf Club in Savannah, Ga. The Murphy, N.C., native countered three bogies with eight birdies on the day, and was standing as low as six-under on the round before finishing at 67. He has recorded a tournament-best 10 birdies through 36 holes.
Sophomore Ricky Stout, who carded WCU's best round on Sunday, slipped into a tie for 11th with a three-over 75 on the second day. The New Bern, N.C., native made the turn at one-over and posted a pair of bogies on the back nine to complete his round.
Three Catamounts enter the final round tied for 28th as juniors Dustin Furnari and Andres Cuenca and freshman Caleb Marsh each have totals of 152. Furnari birdied No. 18 to shoot 75 on the second day, with Marsh shooting 76 and Cuenca carding a 78 on Monday.
The final round will be contested on Tuesday with the first golfers teeing off at 8:00 am. Fans can follow all of the action from both championship events live by visiting www.golfstatresults.com.
